Learning Without Limits: A Vision for Lima's Future

A modern way of autonomous control

Introduction

In Lima, Peru, millions of children grow up trapped in extreme poverty with limited access to quality education. San Juan de Lurigancho, the most populated district in the country, is no exception. International assessments like PISA consistently place Peru among the lowest-ranking countries worldwide, revealing an educational crisis that perpetuates inequality and limits the personal and professional development of future generations. Faced with this reality, a proposal inspired by Sugata Mitra's "Hole in the Wall" project emerges: to install computers equipped with artificial intelligence and educational tools like Khan Academy in strategic locations across the district to foster self-directed learning and break the cycle of poverty.

Development

Securing Computers

As a Swiss citizen with personal and professional contacts in Switzerland, there is an opportunity to manage donations of used but functional computer equipment. Many companies and organizations in Switzerland periodically replace their computers and are willing to donate them when assured they will be used for a worthy cause. Through my company and network, I could coordinate the collection, review, and shipment of these devices to Peru.

Partnerships with the Municipality

A key step would be to establish an agreement with the municipality of San Juan de Lurigancho. This would not only help identify strategic locations for the learning stations, such as libraries or community centers, but also ensure that these facilities are accessible and secure. The involvement of local government would also build trust within the community and ensure ongoing support for the project.

Minimal Maintenance

To ensure the sustainability of the project, the design must be as autonomous as possible. Drawing inspiration from Sugata Mitra's "Hole in the Wall" project, the stations could be equipped with self-diagnostic software and remote updates. Additionally, local volunteers could be trained to address basic issues, minimizing operational costs.

Evaluating Results

The project's impact would be assessed through interactive tests and games designed to measure mathematical, reading, and critical thinking skills. These tools could also be adapted to monitor individual user progress, allowing for adjustments to educational strategies and ensuring effective learning.

Conclusion

The hope is that, as demonstrated in the "Hole in the Wall" project, children will develop self-learning skills and discover their potential without the need for constant supervision. This initiative would not only promote the use of new technologies but also transform how communities perceive education, empowering children and providing them with the tools to become better individuals and citizens. With effort, commitment, and collective support, we could build a future where quality education is not a privilege but a right accessible to all.
